Fisherman's Pride: Beneath the Flowers, Oars Suddenly Heard

Ouyang Xiu · Song dynasty

Among the flowers I suddenly hear the knock of two oars; in a moment my companions come looking for me. And quickly we take lotus leaves to serve as cups; the lotus boat rocks, and ever and again red waves rise in the cup.

Flower scent and wine smell blend, clear and pure; flower cheeks and wine-flushed faces glow red at one another. Drunk, we lean into the green shade and sleep a while; startled, I look up — the boat lies beached upon the sandy shore.

Reading notes

当 means “to use as” and is read dàng. 阁 is used for 搁, read gē here: the boat has run aground. Annotations give both xuán and xuàn for 旋; this page uses xuán, meaning “at once” or “on the spot.” 一饷 means a short while.
