Song of Jiangcheng: Willows at the West Wall Sport in Spring Softness

Qin Guan · Song dynasty

West of the city the willows play with the softness of spring, and stir the grief of parting; the tears are hard to stay. I still remember how tenderly you once tied fast the homing boat. The green fields and the red bridge of that day — the person is not to be seen; only the water flows on in vain.

The shining hours do not wait upon the young; the grief goes on and on — when will it end? When the catkins fly and the blossoms fall, once more I climb the tower. Make the whole spring river all of tears — it still could not flow out so much sorrow.

Reading notes

系 in 系归舟 means tying up a boat and is read jì. 韶华 can mean springtime or youth. 便作 also appears as 便做: even if the whole spring river were made of tears.
