Butterfly Loves the Flower: Smiling Bright, the Autumn Lotus by the Green Bank

Smiling and radiant, the autumn lotus rises from the green shore: red face and slender waist — long known of old, the nymph who walks upon the waves. Catching her image, she makes her toilet, coy as if about to speak. The west wind — how should it be the lord of flowers in their fullness?

I hate the fair season that heaven will not grant: scarce past the slanting sun and already the rain of dusk. Fading at dawn, opening at dusk, she plights herself in vain; in the end none can read the bitterness of her heart.

Reading notes

This page retains 繁花 and 又是; another version has 繁华 and 又值. 朝落暮开 is retained and translated as written: the flower’s fading and opening mirror the sorrow of separation.
