Butterfly Loves the Flower: Chrysanthemums Saddened by Mist, Orchids Weeping Dew

Yan Shu · Song dynasty

The mums by the railing are sad in the mist, the orchids weep with dew; the silk curtains hold a light chill, and the swallows fly away in pairs. The bright moon knows nothing of parting's bitterness: its slanting light pierces the vermilion doors until the dawn.

Last night the west wind withered the green trees; alone I climb the high tower and gaze along the road to the sky's end. I would send a sheet of colored paper and a length of silk — but the hills are long, the waters wide: who knows where?

Reading notes

双飞去 also appears as 双来去, 离恨苦 as 离别苦, and 兼 as 无. This page retains the former readings. 槛 means “railing” and is read jiàn.
