明月皎夜光

明míng月yuè皎jiǎo夜yè光guāng，

促cù织zhī鸣míng东dōng壁bì。

The bright moon shines in the night; the cricket sings on the eastern wall.

玉yù衡héng指zhǐ孟mèng冬dōng，

众zhòng星xīng何hé历lì历lì。

Yuheng, a star in the Northern Dipper, points to the first month of winter; how clearly the many stars are ranged.

白bái露lù沾zhān野yě草cǎo，

时shí节jié忽hū复fù易yì。

White dew wets the wild grass; the season suddenly changes again.

秋qiū蝉chán鸣míng树shù间jiān，

玄xuán鸟niǎo逝shì安ān适shì。

Autumn cicadas sing among the trees; the dark swallows have gone—whither have they flown?

昔xī我wǒ同tóng门mén友yǒu，

高gāo举jǔ振zhèn六liù翮hé。

Once we were fellow students; now you have risen high, beating your six pinions.

不bù念niàn携xié手shǒu好hǎo，

弃qì我wǒ如rú遗yí迹jì。

You think nothing of the friendship of joined hands; you cast me off like a footprint left behind.

南nán箕jī北běi有yǒu斗dǒu，

牵qiān牛niú不bù负fù轭è。

The Winnow in the south, the Dipper in the north; the Herd-boy will not bear the yoke.

良liáng无wú盘pán石shí固gù，

虚xū名míng复fù何hé益yì？

Truly there is no firmness of bedrock—what profit is there in an empty name?
