Extended Washing Creek Sand: Rolling Up the Pearl Blind

Li Jing · Five Dynasties period

I roll with my own hand the pearl blind up onto the jade hook; as of old, the grief of spring locks the tiered tower. The petals falling in the wind — who is their master? My thoughts drift on and on.

The blue bird brings no word from beyond the clouds; the lilac knots its sorrow in the rain, in vain. I turn and look: green waves, and dusk upon the Three Gorges, flowing on to meet the sky.

Reading notes

卷 in 手卷 is read juǎn. 真珠 refers to a pearl curtain; another text explicitly has 珠帘. 三峡暮 also appears as 三楚暮 or 春色暮. This page retains 三峡暮, and the English follows it. The blue bird evokes a messenger; unopened lilac buds suggest knotted sorrow.
