Remembering the Prince: Admiring the Lotus

Li Qingzhao · Song dynasty

A wind comes over the lake, the waves are wide and vast; autumn is late now, the red grows sparse, the fragrance faint. The light of water and the color of hills grow dear to one; the goodness past all telling is endless.

The lotus seeds are formed, the lotus leaves now old; clear dew washes the water ferns and the plants of the shoal. The gulls and herons sleeping in the sand do not turn their heads, as if they too resented that people go home so early.

Reading notes

The dew is written 青露 in one version and 清露 in others. This page retains 青露. 蘋, referring to a water plant, is read pín.
