Remembering the Imperial Capital: Thin Quilt, Small Pillow, Cool Air
薄衾小枕凉天气,
乍觉别离滋味。
展转数寒更,
起了还重睡。
毕竟不成眠,
一夜长如岁。
Thin quilt, narrow pillow, the weather turning cold: suddenly I taste the savor of parting. Tossing, I count the cold night-watches; I rise, and lie down again. After all, sleep will not come; one night is long as a year.
也拟待、
却回征辔;
又争奈、
已成行计。
万种思量,
多方开解,
只恁寂寞厌厌地。
系我一生心,
负你千行泪。
I thought to turn the bridle and ride back — but how can I, when the journey is already settled? Ten thousand reasonings, every manner of easing the heart, and still I am left thus sick and spiritless with loneliness. You bind my heart for all my life; I have failed you, leaving you a thousand trails of tears.
Reading notes
In 数寒更, 数 is read shǔ and 更 gēng, referring to counting the night watches. 行 in 千行泪 is read háng. 厌厌 means listless and is read yān yān.
