Joy of Day and Night: I Recall Our First Meeting in the Bridal Chamber
I remember our first meeting in the inner chamber; it should have been ours to be joined always. Who could have thought that a brief secret joy would turn to parting sorrow? And now too it is the fading twilight of spring; I face a whole world of riotous flowers and wanton willow-down. I fear only that all this fair radiance has gone away with him.
This loneliness — to whom can I tell it? I count how lightly all his former words were broken. Had I known it would be so hard to bear, I would have held him and kept him then. Besides his charm and grace, there was something else that caught my heart. Even on a day when I try not to think of him, I knit my brows a thousand times.
Reading notes
离情别绪 also appears as 别离情绪, and 当时 as 当初; this page retains the former readings. 洞房 means an inner chamber here. The closing lines suggest that even trying not to think of the beloved does not dispel sorrow.
