Crows Crying at Night: Last Night Wind and Rain

Li Yu · Five Dynasties

Last night the wind came with the rain; the curtains rustled with the sound of autumn. The candle gutters, the water-clock runs down; I shift upon the pillow again and again, sit up, and cannot find calm.

The affairs of the world drift away with the flowing water; reckoned up, a life is but one dream. The road to drunkenness is safe — it is fit to travel often; beyond it, I cannot bear to go.

Reading notes

一梦 also appears as 梦里; this page retains 一梦. The closing line presents a speaker unable to bear the world beyond the refuge of intoxication.
