Pure and Peaceful Music: Spring Half Gone Since We Parted

Li Yu · Five Dynasties

Since you went, spring is half spent; whatever I see breaks my tender heart. The fallen plum by the steps is tumbled like snow; I brush it from my robe, and it covers me again.

The geese come, but bring no certain word; the road is far, and the dream of going home is hard to shape. The grief of parting is even as the spring grass: the farther you go, the more it grows.

Reading notes

柔肠断 also appears as 愁肠断; this page retains 柔肠断. Both instances of 还 mean “again” or “still” and are read hái.
