Waves Sifting Sand: Raising Wine to the East Wind

Ouyang Xiu · Song dynasty

I lift my wine and pledge the east wind: let us take our ease together. By the purple road east of Luoyang where the willows droop — it was always there we walked hand in hand; we roamed through all the flowering groves.

Meeting and parting, bitterly hurried — this regret without end. This year's blossoms are redder than last year's. It is a pity next year's will be finer still — with whom then shall I share them?

Reading notes

紫陌 refers to roads around the capital; this page corrects the workbook’s 紫遍 to 紫陌. 洛城 means Luoyang. The closing question asks who will share next year’s outing.
