Spring in the Jade Tower: Before the Cup I Would Set a Date

Ouyang Xiu · Song dynasty

Before the wine cup I meant to speak of the day I return, but as I begin, a lovely face is already overcome with grief. Life of itself holds love's folly; this sorrow has nothing to do with wind or moon.

Sing no new stanza of the parting song — one strain of it can tie the heart in knots. Only when all the flowers of Luoyang have been seen can one part easily, then, with the spring wind.

Reading notes

欲语 also appears as 未语. This page retains 欲语, beginning to speak, and the English follows that reading. 咽 in 惨咽 is read yè, to choke with emotion; 曲 in 一曲 is read qǔ.
