The Beauty Yu: Green Peaches Planted in Heaven with Dew

Qin Guan · Song dynasty

A heavenly peach tree planted with the dew — no bloom of the common kind. Deep among the tangled hills the water winds away; pity that one spray fair as a painting should bloom — for whom?

A light chill and fine rain: how can feeling be held within bounds? Yet spring is so hard to hold. To be drunk for your sake, what harm in that? I fear only waking from wine, at the hour that breaks a man's heart.

Reading notes

The peach blossom can be read both as a flower and as an image of a person. 数 in 凡花数 means a category or rank and is read shù. 一枝 also appears as 一支; this page retains 枝. 为 in 为谁 and 为君 is read wèi.
