Partridge Sky: Orioles on the Branch, Heard Through Tears

Qin Guan · Song dynasty

Upon the branch an oriole sings; I hear it through my tears, new tear-stains mingled with the old. All spring the fish and birds have sent no tidings; a thousand miles of hills and passes weary my dreaming soul.

Not a word to say, facing the fragrant cup: I make ready a broken heart to last until dusk. No sooner have I lit the little lamp than rain beats the pear blossoms and the gate is shut fast.

Reading notes

枝上 also appears as 枕上, 鱼鸟 as 鱼雁, and 肠断 as 断肠. This page retains the former readings. 间 is read jiàn, describing new and old tear stains mingling. The wording 炙得灯儿 occurs in the text consulted and refers to lighting the lamp; 炙 is retained here.
