Washing Creek Sand: Date Blossoms Rustle onto My Robe

Su Shi · Song dynasty

Rustling, the date blossoms fall on head-cloth and coat; north and south of the village the reeling-wheels hum; beside an old willow, in a cloak of straw, someone sells cucumbers.

Heavy with wine, the road long, I only want to sleep; the sun is high, I am thirsty, and idly think of tea. I knock at a door and ask the folk of the hamlet.

Reading notes

缲 is a variant of 缫 and is read sāo in 缲车, a silk-reeling wheel. 漫 also appears as 谩; this page retains 漫.
