The thatched eaves are low and small; beside the brook the green grass grows thick. In their tipsy talk, the Wu dialect sounds fond and gentle—whose white-haired old man and wife are these?

The eldest son hoes the beans east of the brook; the second son is weaving a chicken coop. Dearest of all is the youngest, the little scamp: he lies at the brook's head, shelling lotus pods.

Reading notes

亡 is a variant of 无 and is read wú in 亡赖, an affectionate description of a mischievous child. 吴音 also appears as 蛮音; this page retains 吴音.
