Bodhisattva Barbarian: Written on the Wall at Zaokou

Xin Qiji · Song dynasty

Below Yugu Terrace flows the clear river water, and in it how many tears of travellers! I gaze northwest toward Chang'an—alas for the countless hills.

The green hills cannot hold it back; after all it flows eastward. Evening on the river, and sorrow upon me; deep among the hills I hear the partridge cry.

Reading notes

This page follows the version with 西北望长安 and 毕竟东流去; alternatives include 东北是长安 and 毕竟江流去. 愁余 also appears as 愁予; both 余 and 予 mean “me” here.
