Partridge Sky: Drunk, I Pat My Spring Robe, Cherishing the Old Scent

Yan Jidao · Song dynasty

Drunk, I pat my spring coat, prizing its old fragrance; Heaven sends the grief of parting to vex this reckless one. Year after year autumn grass grows on the roadways; day after day in the tower I watch until the setting sun.

Clouds dim and far, waters vast and dim — the road home for the traveler, how long it is. Longing by its nature is a word with nothing to rest on; do not waste tears in lines upon the flowered paper.

Reading notes

行 in 泪行 is read háng and refers to rows or trails of tears. 花笺 is decorated writing paper; the closing lines question the assurances of love written on it.
