Crossing the River to Gather Lotus

Anonymous · Han dynasty

I cross the river to gather lotus; in the orchid marshes many fragrant plants grow.

I gather them—but to whom shall I send them? The one I long for is far away.

I turn and look back toward my old village; the long road stretches vast and far.

Of one heart, yet living apart—in sorrow and grief I shall grow old.
