Life Does Not Reach a Hundred Years

Anonymous · Han dynasty

The years of life do not reach a hundred, yet we ever harbor cares of a thousand years.

The day is short and we suffer the long night—why not take up a candle and roam?

Pleasure must be taken in its season; how can one wait for a year to come?

The fool grudges his spending, and is only laughed at by later ages.

As for the immortal Wangzi Qiao—it is hard to expect to live as long as he does.
