A Snowy Night at a Mountain Cottage

At dusk the blue-gray mountains lie far away;

In bitter cold a modest white cottage stands.

At the wooden gate I hear a dog bark;

Someone returns through wind and snow at night.

Meaning

At dusk, distant mountains fade and a modest cottage stands in the cold. A dog barks at the wooden gate as someone returns through wind and snow at night. The final scene belongs to night, not bright daylight.
