English translation

Orioles sing and swallows chatter, announcing the new year, to Mayi and Longdui the road runs thousands of li.

Her home is in the towered city, beside the Han park, her heart follows the bright moon to the Tartar skies.

The brocaded words within the loom speak of long regret, the flowering branch by the stair mocks her lonely sleep.

I would ask the commander, the chariot general Dou, when will he wheel his banners and carve Mount Yanran?

Meaning

The oriole's song and the swallow's chatter bring word that a new year draws near; yet Mayi and Longdui on the frontier lie thousands of miles away.

Our home is in the capital, close beside the imperial gardens, but my heart follows the bright moon, drifting to the skies above the Hu lands.

The brocade characters woven at the loom pour out long parting grief; the flowering branch beside the tower blooms in beauty, as if laughing at me for keeping an empty chamber.

May I ask General Dou, the Commander of Chariots and Cavalry who leads the whole army, when he will carve his record of merit upon Mount Yanran and return?
