A Summer Quatrain
In life, one should be a hero among people;
In death, a hero among spirits.
Even now I remember Xiang Yu,
Who would not cross back to Jiangdong.
Notes
Rénjié means an outstanding person; guǐxióng pairs it with a heroic spirit after death. Xiang Yu was a military leader at the end of the Qin dynasty. Jiangdong refers to the region associated with his earlier rise.
Meaning
The poem praises courage in life and death, then recalls Xiang Yu’s refusal to cross back to Jiangdong after defeat.

Life and death, people and spirits form paired contrasts, giving the opening its strong rhythm.
The last two lines recall Xiang Yu. Accounts of the poem’s exact circumstances vary, so the words of the poem and later speculation should be distinguished.
When reading with a child, introduce the historical story gently and talk about what courage can mean in everyday life.
