On the Road through Sangcha Hollow

Yang Wanli · Song dynasty

In clear sun and wind, the rain has dried away.

Grass fills the flowered bank; water fills the stream.

A child sleeps soundly in the willow shade;

An ox has grazed past the shade’s western side.

What the poem means

Sun and wind dry the path after rain. A child sleeps under a willow while the ox grazes its way to the other side of the shade. A small movement gives the quiet scene a story.

Meet the poet
