To Qiu on an Autumn Night

Wei Yingwu · Tang dynasty

I think of you on this autumn night,

Walking and singing of the cool air.

In empty mountains pine seeds fall;

My quiet friend must still be awake.

What the poem means

Walking on a cool autumn night, the poet thinks of a friend. He imagines pine seeds falling in the mountains and wonders whether the friend is still awake. The second scene is imagined from afar.
