Asking a Guest to Stay in the Mountains

Zhang Xu · Tang dynasty

Mountain light and living things play in spring sunshine;

Do not plan to leave for just a little shade.

Even if skies are clear with no sign of rain,

Deep among the clouds your clothes may still grow damp.

What the poem means

The host invites a guest to enjoy the beautiful spring mountain rather than leave because of a little cloud. Even without rain, deep mountain mist can dampen clothes. A natural detail becomes a friendly invitation.

Meet the poet

Zhang Xu was a Tang poet and calligrapher. Mountain beauty and mist become a friendly invitation to stay.
