Song of the South: The Star River Turns in the Sky

Li Qingzhao · Song dynasty

In heaven the star-river has turned; on earth the curtains are let down. A chill rises from pillow and sleeping-mat, and the stains of tears increase. I rise and loosen my silk robe, and ask idly: what hour of the night is it?

Small lotus seedpods are appliquéd in green; the gilded lotus-leaf embroidery has worn thin. The weather as of old, the clothes as of old — only the feeling of the heart is not as it was in the old days at home.

Reading notes

其 is read jī in 夜何其, an expression asking what hour of the night it is. The lotus seedpods and leaves here are decorations on clothing.
