A Spray of Plum: Red Lotus Fragrance Fades, Autumn on the Jade Mat

Li Qingzhao · Song dynasty

The red lotus has faded, its fragrance spent; the jade mat feels autumn's chill. I lightly loosen my silk robe and alone board the magnolia boat. Who will send a brocaded letter through the clouds? When the wild geese come back in their formation, the moon will fill the western tower.

Flowers drift and fall of themselves; the water flows on of itself. One single longing, two places' idle sorrow. This feeling no scheme can drive away: it has just left my brows when already it rises in my heart.
