Rouged Lips: After Playing on the Swing

Having done with the swing, I rise and listlessly smooth my slender hands. Heavy with dew, the flowers are slender; thin sweat soaks my light garment through.

Seeing a guest come in, I flee in my stockings alone, my golden hairpin slipping. Shy, I run away—then lean in the doorway and look back, and pretend to smell the green plums.

Reading notes

Traditionally attributed to Li Qingzhao, this lyric has a disputed authorship. Wang Zhongwen’s annotated collection places it among doubtful works, while other editors accept it. This page reads 露浓花瘦 (flowers heavy with dew). 袜刬 describes stepping out in stockings.
