Rouged Lips: Boudoir Thoughts

Li Qingzhao · Song dynasty

Lonely in the deep women's rooms: one inch of tender heart, a thousand strands of sorrow. I cherish spring, yet spring departs; a few drops of rain hasten the flowers on.

I have leaned along all the railings, and still there is no easing of the heart. Where is he? — the faded grass reaches to the sky, and my eyes wear out the road of his coming back.

Reading notes

衰草 also appears as 芳草 or 芳树, changing the seasonal imagery. This page retains 衰草 without assigning a specific month of composition.
