Butterfly Loves the Flower: Leaning on the High Tower

Liu Yong · Song dynasty

Long I lean upon the high tower, the wind fine and thin; gazing to the very edge of spring's sorrow, it rises gloomily upon the sky's rim. In the grass-color and the misty light of the fading glow, wordless — who understands this leaning upon the rail?

I would give myself to careless wildness and plan one drunkenness: face the wine and sing — but forced mirth has no savor. My girdle grows looser, and I do not regret it; for her I am willing to be wasted away.
