Returning from Guangling

Qin Guan · Song dynasty

The sky is cold, water birds huddle close together; in flocks of tens and hundreds they play in the falling light.

Travelers pass them all by and none of them rise; suddenly they hear a splash upon the water and fly up as one.

Reading notes

This is the fourth poem in the sequence “Returning from Guangling”; this page keeps the common shortened title. 水响, “a sound from the water,” also appears as 冰响, “a sound from the ice.” This page retains 水. 还 in the title means returning and is read huán; 都 in 都不起 is read dōu.
