Gazing South: She Finishes Her Dressing

Wen Tingyun · Tang dynasty

Her washing and dressing finished, she leans alone upon the river-viewing tower. A thousand sails pass by, and none is his; the slanting light is tender, the water flows on and on. Heartbroken at the isle of white ping water-plants.

Reading notes

蘋, read pín, names a water plant; the English keeps ping rather than identifying it as duckweed. 脉脉 is read mò mò and suggests tenderness. The tune is also called Meng Jiangnan; this page retains Wang Jiangnan.
