Bodhisattva Barbarian: Hills Overlapping, Gold Flickering

Wen Tingyun · Tang dynasty

The folds of the little screen glint with gold, now bright, now dim; her cloud-like hair would stray across her snow-white scented cheek. She rises lazily to paint her moth-brows, and dawdles over combing and dressing.

She checks her flowers in mirrors before and behind her; flowers and face reflect each other. On her newly pressed embroidered silk jacket, golden partridges appear in pairs.

Reading notes

小山 has been interpreted as a folding screen, eyebrow makeup, or hair ornaments. The English follows the screen reading, without treating it as settled. 新帖 has readings involving freshly pressed clothing or newly affixed embroidery; the English follows the pressing interpretation. 帖 also appears as 贴; this page retains 帖. 襦 is a short jacket; 双双 describes paired partridge motifs.
