On and On, Ever Onward

Anonymous · Han dynasty

On and on, and again on and on, parted from you while we live.

Ten thousand li lie between us, each of us at one corner of the sky.

The road is hard and long—who can say when we shall meet again?

The horse of the north still leans into the northern wind; the bird of Yue nests on the southern branch.

Day by day we grow farther apart; day by day my girdle grows looser.

Floating clouds veil the white sun; the wanderer does not think of turning back.

Thinking of you makes one grow old; the years and months are suddenly late.

Let it go, and speak of it no more—take care, and eat your fill.
