Green, Green the Grass by the River

Anonymous · Han dynasty

Green, green, the grass along the river bank; lush, lush, the willows in the garden.

Fair, fair, the lady in the tower; bright, bright, there at the window.

Lovely, lovely, her rouge and powder; slender, slender, her white hands appearing.

Once she was a singing-house girl; now she is a wanderer's wife.

The wanderer goes and does not return—an empty bed is hard to keep alone.
