Spring Outing at Fengle Pavilion: No. 3

Ouyang Xiu · Song dynasty

Red-flowering trees and green hills, and the sun about to sink; the grass of the long outskirts is green without bound.

The pleasure-seekers care nothing that spring is growing old; they come and go before the pavilion, walking over the fallen flowers.

Reading notes

This is the third of three poems on a spring outing at Fengle Pavilion. 红树 can mean red-flowering trees or trees reddened by sunset, rather than autumn foliage; 春将老 evokes late spring. 斜 is read xié in modern Mandarin.
