Leaving Chuzhou

Ouyang Xiu · Song dynasty

Chinese · Pinyin · English
花huā光guāng浓nóng烂làn柳liǔ轻qīng明míng,
酌zhuó酒jiǔ花huā前qián送sòng我wǒ行xíng。

The flower-light is thick and brilliant, the willows softly bright; they pour out wine before the flowers to speed me on my way.

我wǒ亦yī且qiě如rú常cháng日rì醉zuì,
莫mò教jiào弦xián管guǎn作zuò离lí声shēng。

I too will get drunk as on any other day—only let not the strings and pipes sound a parting air.

Reading notes

滁 is Chuzhou. 莫教 means “do not let”; 教 is read jiào in modern Mandarin in this causative sense. 弦管 means strings and wind instruments. 常日醉 speaks of getting drunk as on an ordinary day; 离声 is farewell music.
