Seeking Flowers by the River, No. 6

Du Fu · Tang dynasty

Flowers fill the path at Fourth Lady Huang’s home;

Thousands of blossoms weigh the branches low.

Lingering butterflies dance again and again;

Carefree orioles sing their lovely calls.

What the poem means

Flowers crowd the path by Huang Siniang's home and weigh down the branches. Butterflies linger and orioles sing freely. Repeated words give the lively spring scene a musical pulse.

Meet the poet

This is the sixth poem in Du Fu’s sequence about seeking flowers by the river.
