A Quatrain: Two Golden Orioles

Du Fu · Tang dynasty

Two golden orioles sing among green willows;

A row of white egrets rises into the blue sky.

My window frames the West Ridge’s lasting snow;

By my door lie boats bound for distant Eastern Wu.

What the poem means

Two orioles sing among green willows and a line of egrets rises into blue sky. Snowy mountains appear through the window, while boats rest by the door. Near and far share the view.

Meet the poet

Du Fu was a Tang poet. Here birds, distant mountains and boats share one scene.
