What I Saw from a Boat at Night

Zha Shenxing · Qing dynasty

On a moonless night I see a fishing lamp,

One lonely glow, a little firefly.

A faint breeze gathers the ripples,

Scattering its light into a river of stars.

What the poem means

On a moonless night, a fishing lamp glows like a firefly. A breeze ripples the water and scatters its reflection into a river of stars. The stars are a comparison for moving light.
