The Countryside in the Fourth Month

Weng Juan · Song dynasty

Green spreads over hills; pale water fills the fields.

Cuckoos call through rain as fine as mist.

Few are idle in the countryside’s fourth month:

Silkworm work done, they plant the rice at once.

What the poem means

Green covers the hills while flooded fields reflect pale light. Cuckoos call through mist-like rain. People are busy with silkworms and rice planting; beauty and hard work share the season.
