On the Road to Sanqu

Zeng Ji · Song dynasty

When plums turn yellow, clear days follow clear;

The stream journey ends, and then I take the hill path.

Green shade is no less lovely than on the way here;

Now four or five oriole calls are added.

What the poem means

During plum-ripening season, clear days invite a journey by stream and then by mountain path. The shade remains lovely, with added oriole calls on the return.

Meet the poet

Zeng Ji was a Song poet. Streams, a hill path and birdsong give this journey an easy charm.
