Like a Dream: Often I Recall the Brook Pavilion at Dusk

I often remember the dusk at the brookside pavilion: drunk so deep I lost the way home. When the pleasure was spent and we turned the boat back late, we strayed into the heart of the lotus blossoms. Pushing on, pushing on—we startled into flight a whole flock of gulls and herons from the sandbank.

Reading notes

Some versions read 一行 (a line of birds) instead of 一滩 (a sandbank full of birds). This page retains 一滩. 争渡 is also interpreted as a question about how to cross.
