Endless Longing: Range Upon Range of Hills

Li Yu · Five Dynasties

One fold of hills, two folds of hills. The hills are far, the sky is high, the misty water cold; the maple leaves of my longing are red.

The chrysanthemums open, the chrysanthemums fade. The frontier geese fly high, and he has not returned; a screen of wind and moon, left idle.

Reading notes

Usually attributed to Li Yu, this lyric is also ascribed to Deng Su in a version noted in Nan Tang Er Zhu Ci. This page retains Li Yu’s attribution and records the alternative. 塞 in 塞雁 is read sài.
