Cooling Off

Qin Guan · Song dynasty

With my staff I seek cool air beyond the willows;

South of the painted bridge, I rest on a folding seat.

In moonlight, boat flutes sound here and there;

The wind rests; lotus fragrance lingers freely.

What the poem means

The poet rests on a folding chair near a bridge beyond the willows. Flute music comes from boats in the moonlight, while lotus fragrance lingers in still air. The ancient hu bed here is a portable seat.

Meet the poet

Qin Guan was a Song poet. Moonlight, flute music and lotus scent evoke summer-night ease.
