Seeking Coolness

Yang Wanli · Song dynasty

Night is still as hot as noon;

I open the door and stand briefly in moonlight.

Where bamboo and trees grow dense and insects call,

A little coolness comes at times: it is not wind.

What the poem means

The night remains as hot as noon. Standing outside in moonlight, the poet notices occasional coolness among dense bamboo, trees and insect sounds, even without a clear breeze.

Meet the poet
