Rain in a Mountain Village

Wang Jian · Tang dynasty

In rain, roosters call from one or two homes;

By a bamboo stream a plank bridge crosses the village path.

Women call one another to tend the silkworms,

While gardenias quietly bloom in the courtyard.

What the poem means

Roosters call from a few rainy village homes beside bamboo, a stream and a plank bridge. Women call to one another about silkworm work, while gardenias bloom quietly in the courtyard.

Meet the poet

Wang Jian was a Tang poet. Busy village life and still courtyard flowers share the same rainy scene.
