Spring Snow

Han Yu · Tang dynasty

The new year has come, but blossoms are still absent;

In the second month, fresh grass shoots bring delight.

White snow seems to think spring is too late,

And flits through garden trees like flying flowers.

What the poem means

The new year brings no blossoms yet, so the first grass shoots delight the poet. Snow seems impatient for spring and dances through the trees like flying flowers. This is playful imagination.
